Bernie

I want to talk about Bernie.

Bernie Nofziger is from Lebanon, Oregon. I met him here in Zihuatanejo two months ago and I am proud to call him my friend. Bernie has been coming to Zihuatanejo for a long time but this is the first time our paths have crossed. Bernie was widowed after 51 years of marriage and has been single for the last ten. If your math is good you will realize that Bernie is in his early 80's. His business card has the image of Mr Magoo and the resemblance is uncanny. The card reads "I spent most of my money on women and booze. The rest I just wasted. Now, I am on a low fixed income. Need Help !"
Bernie walks all over Zihuatanejo and even to Ixtapa. He dances the night away and there is never a shortage of beautiful women waiting to dance with him. He loves life, he has fun, he has many friends and he has a pool of energy that puts most of us young guys to shame. Did I mention that he is in his 80's???? I have told him several times "Bernie, I want to be just like you." and he says "Okay, but don't be as ugly as me" and his laugh is as honest as the day is long. GO BERNIE !!! We all love ya !!!

Jim,
Googled in Bernie's name which got me to your site. Phil & I are some of Bernie's best friends in Lebanon, OR. Just wanted to let you know that Bernie was on a bear hunt trip in Canada with Tred Barta who has a TV show on NBC Sports, and he had an accident. On Feb 14th he fell while on some stairs & hit his head. Being out in the back country, he was saved by a medical person on the trip who was able to get the bleeding slowed down. He was 4X4rd to Williams Lake and stablized at a hospital there, then Life Flighted to a trauma hospital in Kamloops.
He is not doing well. The Drs. finally stopped the brain from swelling, but Bernie can't walk & is being fed through a tube. He is unresponsive and can't walk or sit up. His son, Gary, is with him. Plans are being made to fly him home to a hospital in Portland or Eugene. Please have everyone in Zihuatanejo say a prayer. Thanks Joli jolir@centurytel.net

Hello, My name is Al and I'm also a friend of Bernie's. I ran across this blog while searching for Bernie's phone number online.I saw the prior comment and wanted to let you knwo that Bernie is alive and doing well. He recovered in fine fashion from his fall and brain injury. Bernie is showing signs of slowing down, but for a man in his 80's, he still lives a full life.
I am a member of a political acito motorcycle group and Bernies invites us for a campout on his property the first weekend of August every year. We look forward to it with great anticipation and Bernies always manages to charm all the biker girls away from us...same old Mr. Magoo!
Bless you for the post regarding Bernie and I hope life treats you well.

We met Bernie in May 2017 at Club Med Turks and Caicos. He was doing great dancing and chatting it up as usual. He did have a little fall at the resort but was up and running. He joked that he fell on purpose to get everyone's attention.

Bernie was the most lovely person I met there. He had so many stories to share both sad and happy. He told me about all the people in Zihuatenjo and about the painting of him hanging in some bar.

Bernie can always crack a joke that involves making fun of himself and his perspective on life is so even keeled despite the losses. I was quite amazed by him. Bernie is the most evolved person I know. It was an honor to meet him and if I get to see him again it will be another gift.

Thanks for putting up your story about Bernie. I'm going to call his card and check on him now.

Cheers!
Oki
