A man. A van. A plan. A hurricane.

My plan is still to stay ahead of the storm by leaving Atlanta today and heading northwest to southern Missouri. Then, as Ike turns east, I will head southwest to Amarillo and eventually to visit my sister in Seymour, Texas before heading south for Austin and Houston. Let's see how that plan comes together ....

Just a little too late ....

My road trip starts tomorrow and today as I made one last trip into town for food for the road when I got the call from my cousin Kay that dear Ivy had passed away. Knowing that her health was failing it was my hope to have one more visit with her but it just wasn't meant to be. I will pay my respects to the family as I pass through their respective areas. She was a dear, sweet lady who brought much joy to the world in song and in every aspect of her life. She will be missed and remembered fondly by many. Trying to reason with hurricane season

I bid farewell to George and Janet and headed south for Dunedin (where I was born) and Clearwater (where my brother was born). It was a very warm, sunny day and after meandering through the old parts of town I made my way to Fort De Soto Park on St. Christopher Key to find a campsite. Almost everyone had gone and the peace and quiet was soothing. My campsite is just 100 feet from the water and there are lots of critters to enjoy; everything from little lizards to big cranes and other birds. I woke to a most spectacular morning. It had been a warm, muggy night but now there was a cool zephyr bringing me the songs of birds from not too far off. The sun was not quite over the horizon but it was very bright. I made breakfast and then headed to the fort that the park is named after. A nice visit to the museum, a walk on the pier and maybe even a walk along the white sandy beach is in order. Once again I find myself alone on a beautiful tropical beach... hummmmm.

Excitement

I had just crossed into Nebraska and I could see ahead that a storm was brewing ... a big storm. I tuned my XM radio to the weather station and they said to expect hail and strong winds. As I got to the top of the hill there was a rest stop with a perfect view point ... windmill, moon and storm ... Wow! After getting this shot I continued on I-80 heading right toward the heart of the storm. However the storm was moving away almost as fast as I approached. As the sun went down behind me the lightning show began and it was a duzy. I pulled off at the next exit and drove up a dirt road lined by corn fields and finally found a good vantage point. I grabbed my camera and tripod and climbed up the ladder and onto the platform I had put there for just such an occasion. I took about 30 shots but the lightning was mostly elusive. I did get this one shot before heading back to the highway. Welcome to Nebraska!
